Bemerton Heath: then and now

As part of the expansion of cities during and following the second world war, Bemerton Heath just outside Salisbury, was built to house families of a growing population. By the mid-1950s there were over 900 new homes on the estate.

Commissioned by Salisbury Museum, I visited the estate to meet and interact with a group of residents at the Bemerton Heath Centre, listening to their incredible stories of growing up on the estate.

We photographed some of the residents at locations which either formed part of their childhood memories or were significant to their life stories.

The images form part of a permanent showcase within a new wing of Salisbury Museum, explaining the history of the estate through the war, up to present day. It was a real privilege to have met and documented the residents, hearing their evocative, historic tales!
